Dermal fillers are one of the most popular non-surgical cosmetic treatments available, offering natural-looking results with minimal downtime. At FTT Skin Clinics — with clinics in Hamilton and Inverness — our Advanced Medical Practitioners use only premium, medically-licensed HA (hyaluronic acid) gel fillers to restore lost volume, soften lines, and beautifully reshape facial features.

Frequently asked questions
Find out more…
What are dermal fillers and how do they work?
Dermal fillers are injectable gels — most commonly made from hyaluronic acid (HA), a substance naturally found in the skin — that add volume, smooth wrinkles, and restore facial structure. When injected, they plump the area immediately. HA fillers are temporary and gradually broken down by the body over several months.
How long do dermal fillers last?
Results typically last between 6 and 18 months, depending on the type of filler used and the area treated. Lips tend to metabolise filler faster (6–9 months), while cheek and jaw fillers often last 12–18 months. Your practitioner will discuss expected duration at your consultation.
Are dermal fillers painful?
Most patients experience minimal discomfort. At FTT Skin Clinics we apply a topical anaesthetic cream before treatment, and many of the filler products we use also contain lidocaine (a local anaesthetic). You may feel slight pressure or a brief sting during injection, but the treatment is generally very well tolerated.
What is the difference between dermal fillers and anti-wrinkle injections (Botox)?
Anti-wrinkle injections work by relaxing the muscles that cause expression lines — such as forehead lines and crow’s feet. Dermal fillers work differently: they physically add volume beneath the skin to plump wrinkles, restore lost volume in cheeks or lips, or reshape facial features. Both treatments can complement each other.
What are the risks and side effects of dermal fillers?
Common side effects include temporary swelling, bruising, redness, and tenderness at the injection site, which typically resolve within 24–72 hours. Serious complications are rare but can include vascular occlusion. At FTT Skin Clinics, all treatments are carried out by Advanced Medical Practitioners trained in complication management, including the use of Hyalase to dissolve filler if required.
Can dermal fillers be reversed or dissolved?
Yes. HA-based dermal fillers can be dissolved using an enzyme called Hyaluronidase (Hyalase). At FTT Skin Clinics we offer a dedicated Dissolve & Solve Clinic to correct poorly placed filler, whether administered here or elsewhere. Please allow 7 days between dissolving and any further filler treatment.
Who is suitable for dermal fillers?
Dermal fillers are suitable for adults who are in good general health and wish to address volume loss, deep lines, or facial asymmetry. Treatment is not suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding. A full medical history is taken at consultation and our practitioners will advise whether treatment is appropriate for you.
How do I know which filler treatment is right for me?
Choosing the correct product and technique for your anatomy and goals is what separates a great result from an average one. At FTT Skin Clinics, every patient receives a comprehensive facial assessment at consultation. We will assess your facial structure, skin quality, and desired outcome before recommending the most appropriate treatment — whether that is HA gel, Profhilo, Sculptra, or a combination approach.
Is FTT Skin Clinics regulated?
Yes. FTT Skin Clinics is regulated by Healthcare Improvement Scotland (HIS), the Scottish equivalent of the CQC. All our practitioners hold recognised medical qualifications, are fully insured, and receive ongoing training in the latest techniques and safety protocols. You can book with complete confidence in the quality and safety of your care.
