Smokers Lines & Perioral Filler – Hamilton & Inverness
Introduction
Fine vertical lines around the lips and mouth — commonly known as smokers lines or perioral lines — are one of the most persistent and ageing concerns our patients ask us about. Despite the name, these lines are not exclusive to smokers; they can develop in anyone due to repeated muscle movement, sun damage, collagen loss, and the natural ageing process.
At FTT Skin Clinics in Hamilton and Inverness, our Advanced Medical Practitioners use small, precise amounts of HA (hyaluronic acid) dermal filler to soften and fill these fine lines, smoothing the skin around the mouth and restoring a more youthful appearance. The treatment can be combined with anti-wrinkle injections to the orbicularis oris muscle (the muscle that causes pursing of the lips) for longer-lasting results.
This is one of the most delicate filler treatments to perform well — the perioral area demands extreme precision to avoid overcorrection, an unnatural appearance, or the ‘pillow lip’ effect. At FTT Skin Clinics, you can be confident that the treatment will be approached conservatively, with your natural appearance always as the primary goal.

Frequently asked questions
What causes smokers lines?
Smokers lines are caused by a combination of repeated lip muscle movement (pursing, sipping through straws, smoking), collagen and elastin loss due to ageing, and UV damage. The skin around the mouth is thinner than elsewhere on the face and loses structural support faster than other areas.
Can filler completely remove smokers lines?
Filler can significantly soften perioral lines, but very deep or longstanding lines may not be fully eliminated with filler alone. For best results, filler is often combined with anti-wrinkle treatment to reduce the muscle activity that causes the lines, and sometimes with a skin-resurfacing treatment such as a chemical peel or RF microneedling to improve overall skin quality in the area.
Will filler make my lips look bigger?
Not necessarily. Perioral filler is placed into the fine lines above and around the lip border, not inside the lip itself. Provided the correct product and volume are used, the treatment should have minimal impact on lip size or projection. If you would also like lip enhancement, this can be discussed as a separate or combined treatment.
How long do the results last?
Results typically last between 6 and 12 months. Because the perioral area is highly mobile — we use these muscles constantly for speaking, eating and facial expression — filler in this area tends to metabolise faster than in less mobile areas like the cheeks or temples.
What is the aftercare for perioral filler?
Avoid extreme heat, vigorous exercise, and alcohol for 24 hours. Avoid manipulating or massaging the treated area. Stay well hydrated. If you notice any unusual blanching, mottling, or pain beyond expected tenderness, contact the clinic immediately. Full written aftercare instructions will be provided at your appointment.
