Dark Circles
Dark Circles Around the Eyes

Understanding Dark Circles
Dark circles are more than just a sign of tiredness; they are a multi-faceted skin issue influenced by various factors, including aging, genetics, and lifestyle habits. The skin around our eyes is incredibly delicate, making it more susceptible to changes in pigmentation, loss of volume, and the appearance of shadows.
Why do we have Darks Circles?
- Increased Pigmentation: Melanin production can contribute to the darker appearance of the skin under the eyes.
- Volume Loss: Aging and environmental factors can reduce the fat pads under the eyes, exacerbating the look of dark circles.
- Allergies: Sinus congestion can cause blood to pool under the eyes, leading to dark, puffy eyelids.
- Skin Conditions: Eczema and other skin issues can lead to inflammation and darkening of the under-eye area.
Who is Affected?
Dark circles don’t discriminate. They can appear in adolescents as well as the elderly, impacting various ethnic backgrounds and those with a genetic predisposition.
Those prone to dark circles under the eyes include:
- The elderly (but they are also a common complaint in adolescents).
- People of non-white ethnic background.
- People with a genetic predisposition to dark circles under the eyes.
Dark circles can be attributed to by volume loss under the eyes. As you age, your skin naturally loses its elasticity and becomes more fragile due to loss of fat in the fat pads under your eyes. Volume loss can also occur prematurely in young people due to high UV exposure, poor diet and lifestyle, lack of sleep, or due to inherited traits.
The second leading cause of dark circles are allergies. Congestion in your sinuses leads to congestion in the small veins under your eyes. The blood pools under your eyes and these swollen veins dilate and darken, creating dark circles and puffiness.
Another cause of dark circles can be atopic dermatitis, commonly known as eczema. When flare ups of itchy inflamed skin occurs under the eyes, damage can result from scratching and irritating the delicate skin tissue, results in dark patches under the eyes, in combination with pigmentation and natural thinning of the skin as you age.

Are dark circles always a sign of aging?
While aging can exacerbate dark circles, they can also result from genetics, allergies, and lifestyle factors.
How quickly can I see results from treatments?
Results vary based on the treatment type and individual skin conditions. Some treatments offer immediate improvements, while others require a series of sessions.
Can sleeping more reduce dark circles?
Improving sleep quality can help minimize dark circles. Lack of restful sleep often exacerbates the appearance of dark circles, making the under-eye area appear more hollow and discolored.
How do genetics influence dark circles?
Genetics play a significant role in the development of dark circles. If your family members have dark circles, you’re more likely to have them too, due to hereditary factors affecting skin pigmentation and under-eye structure.
Are dark circles linked to dehydration?
Yes, dehydration can cause dark circles to appear more pronounced. When the body lacks adequate hydration, the skin under the eyes becomes dull and sunken, highlighting dark circles.
Can diet affect dark circles?
A balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals can impact the appearance of dark circles. Nutrient deficiencies, particularly in vitamins K, C, and E, can worsen the visibility of dark circles under the eyes.
How effective are home remedies for dark circles?
While home remedies can offer temporary relief for dark circles, they often do not address the underlying causes. For lasting results, clinical treatments combined with a proper skincare regimen are recommended.
Do eye creams really work for dark circles?
Eye creams formulated with active ingredients like retinol, vitamin C, and caffeine can improve the appearance of dark circles by increasing collagen production, improving blood circulation, and reducing pigmentation.
Can sun exposure worsen dark circles?
Yes, excessive sun exposure can aggravate dark circles by increasing melanin production, leading to further darkening of the under-eye area. Wearing sunscreen and protective eyewear can help prevent this.
Is it possible to prevent dark circles?
While you can’t always prevent dark circles, especially if they’re genetically predisposed, you can minimize their appearance by maintaining a healthy lifestyle, using sunscreen, staying hydrated, and following a targeted skincare routine.
How long does it take to see results from treatments for dark circles?
The time it takes to see improvements in dark circles varies depending on the treatment method and individual skin conditions. Some may notice changes within a few weeks, while others might require several months for significant results.
Are there any risks associated with treatments for dark circles?

How do lifestyle habits impact dark circles?
Lifestyle habits such as smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, and lack of sleep can significantly impact the severity of dark circles. These habits can impair blood circulation and lead to skin damage, worsening the appearance of dark circles.
Are dark circles more common in certain skin tones?
Dark circles can affect all skin tones, but they may be more noticeable in people with lighter or thinner skin under the eyes. This visibility is due to the contrast between the dark circles and the surrounding skin color.
Can dark circles be permanently removed?
While some treatments can significantly reduce the appearance of dark circles, a permanent solution depends on the underlying cause. For some, combining professional treatments with lifestyle changes can offer long-lasting results, but maintenance may be necessary.
Can certain allergies exacerbate dark circles?
Allergies are a common culprit behind dark circles. They can cause the area under the eyes to appear darker and more swollen due to inflammatory responses and congestion in the nasal passages, which affects blood flow around the eyes.
Is it true that dark circles can be a sign of underlying health issues?
In some cases, dark circles can indicate underlying health concerns, such as thyroid problems. However, most often, dark circles are not a sign of serious medical conditions but rather a cosmetic concern related to lifestyle factors or genetics.
Conclusion

Menopausal Skin
What is Menopausal skin?
The Menopausal skin time of life begins 12 months after a woman’s last period. This triggers changes throughout the body, hair but also your skin. Post-menopause changes and skin concerns are mainly all a result of the declining hormone Estrogen. When this hormone declines, water retention, hydration and collagen production also drops as a result. Here at FTT Skin Clinics we offer a range of in clinic treatments and at home skin care. To maximise your well-being and skin’s health during these unfamiliar changes.
Symptoms of Menopausal Skin Concerns.
- Loss of Volume and Plumpness of Skin – When our hormone levels drop, our collagen production decreases with it. We lose that youthful, hydrated bounce to our skin, most commonly around the cheek & jowls area of the face. Tissue & skin may start to sag as well as lose its tightness.
- Skin Irritation – Due to decreased skin hydration you may find your skin being more dry than usual, flakey texture as well as irritable. If your skin looks red or rashy, we advise seeing your doctor first.
- Dark Spots or Age Spots – Age & dark spots appear commonly after menopausal change. This may look like a change in pigmentation of your skin.
- Excess/Unwanted Facial Hair – Most commonly developed on the upper lip, chin, lower part of the face
- Post-Menopausal Acne Breakout – Unfortunately even if you are someone who has not suffered from acne prior, decreasing Estrogen can trigger Acne breakouts.

Xanthelasma
What is Xanthelasma?
Xanthelasma, characterized by yellow growths around the eyes, is a condition where cholesterol deposits accumulate under the skin. Xanthelasma, also known as xanthelasma palpebrarum (XP), is a distinctive manifestation that frequently appears near the corners of the eyelids adjacent to the nose. Xanthelasma is often associated with various health indicators, including diabetes, high cholesterol, and thyroid issues.
Xanthelasma is a skin concern many people are unaware of or goes undiagnosed. Characterised by yellowy bumpy patches around the corner of the eyes and on the eyelids, Xanthelasma is a soft, fatty deposit that forms under the skin. Even though it is rare, the skin concern is more common in woman than men in their 40’s & 50’s. Neither painful nor harmful, however it can be the sign of an underlying health condition. Before coming into the clinic, we advise you to go to GP prior to have this checked, as well as having your bloods checked.
For those affected by Xanthelasma, understanding its implications is crucial. Xanthelasma, while harmless in itself, can serve as a visual sign of underlying conditions. Xanthelasma’s presence may suggest a need for closer monitoring of heart health, especially since it is linked to potential future issues like heart disease, heart attack, and atherosclerosis.
Diagnosis of Xanthelasma?
The diagnosis of Xanthelasma is straightforward, typically requiring a visual examination by a healthcare provider. Tests may be recommended to check cholesterol levels, thyroid function, blood sugar, and liver function. When it comes to Xanthelasma, awareness of associated risk factors is vital. Factors such as being assigned female at birth, being overweight, using tobacco products, having diabetes, high blood pressure, or a family history of high cholesterol or Xanthelasma can contribute to its occurrence.
Addressing Xanthelasma often involves its removal by a healthcare provider. The preferred method for Xanthelasma removal is often liquid nitrogen cryotherapy. Other options include surgery, laser surgery, radiofrequency ablation, chemical peel, and extreme heat treatments. It’s important to note that Xanthelasma treatments may have side effects, including skin color changes, scars, pain, and eyelid alterations.
Symptoms of Xanthelasma.
- Yellowy/off white fatty deposits in the corner of the eye or on the eyelids.
- Vary in shapes and sizes.
- Raised, soft bumps.
Sometimes Xanthelasma can go misdiagnosed as Milia (Please see skin concern page on Milia), both have similar characteristics however are very different in diagnosis.
What can we do to help?
For the majority of cases, Xanthelasma is completely harmless. However due to its appearance it may be something you decide you want to have removed. Unfortunately the skin concern will not disappear overtime but may increase in size at a steady rate.
We have a variety of in non-invasive Xanthelasma removal treatments including Electrolysis and Plasma Non-Surgical. Using an ionised gas, Plasma removes all organic matter from the surface of the skin. Please see our treatment page on Plasma Non-Surgical for further information on this treatment. Xanthelasma removal treatment is both extremely effective and non-invasive with minimal treatment sessions required.
Prior your both treatments we will carry out a full complimentary skin consultation with analysis to discuss the best treatment for you. Although it is an uncommon skin concern, here at FTT our advanced practitioners are here to help, guide & advise you through your skin concerns treatment plan. Â If you are concerned about having Xanthelasma or unsure of what it may be, please book an appointment with your GP prior coming into clinic.
While Xanthelasma doesn’t pose an immediate health risk, seeking timely treatment is essential for those concerned about its appearance. Regular follow-up appointments after Xanthelasma removal are recommended, providing an opportunity for healthcare providers to monitor recovery and address any side effects.
Additionally, individuals with Xanthelasma are encouraged to adopt heart-healthy practices, as directed by their healthcare providers, to mitigate potential future health issues. In essence, Xanthelasma, though primarily a cosmetic concern, warrants attention and proactive management for overall well-being.
Blackheads
What are Blackheads?
Blackheads are a common skin concern that affects many individuals regardless of age or skin type. These small, dark spots are not only a form of mild acne but also a signal from our skin that requires immediate attention. In this comprehensive skin concerns guide, we explore deep into the world of blackheads, uncovering their causes, highlighting effective treatments, and offering preventative tips to keep blackheads at bay.
Blackheads, the pesky dark dots that often populate the nose, chin, and forehead, are the result of clogged hair follicles. The presence of blackheads on your skin signals the accumulation of oils, dirt, and dead skin cells. When exposed to air, the clogged material in the pores oxidizes, turning black, hence the term “blackheads.” Blackheads are not whiteheads or spots but are a mild type of acne. We have a variety of in clinic and at home treatment plans to help you clear your skin of blackheads.
The Root Causes of Blackheads
Understanding what causes blackheads is crucial for effective treatment and prevention. Blackheads form when excess sebum (the skin’s natural oil) and dead skin cells accumulate and block the pores. Hormonal changes, especially during puberty, can increase sebum production, elevating the risk of blackheads. Furthermore, improper skincare routines or using comedogenic products can exacerbate the formation of blackheads.
Types of Blackheads
Blackheads will vary in size and depth and can be found most commonly around the face but also appear on the back and in some cases other parts of the body where our natural oils have clogged. On the face we most commonly find blackheads on and around the nose, chin, forehead and jawline.
Effective Treatments for  Blackheads
The battle against blackheads involves a combination of professional treatments and at-home care. Professional treatments for blackheads, such as chemical peels, microdermabrasion, and laser therapy, can significantly reduce their appearance by deeply cleansing the pores. At FTT Skin Clinics, we offer specialized treatments like the Obagi Blue Radiance Peel and LED therapy tailored for individuals struggling with blackheads.
Symptom Check
- Dark, slightly raised bumps of the skin (usually smaller than whiteheads other types of spots).
- Not tender or painful like whiteheads or spots.
- Usually gather in small clusters.

As a medical skin care provider, we offer a full complimentary initial skin analysis with our medical skin experts to begin your skin health journey. To some blackheads may not bother or irritate someone’s skin or appearance. However continuously clogged pores may cause further dirt build which can lead to other forms of acne.
At Home Care to Prevent Blackheads
Preventing blackheads is achievable with a consistent and proper skincare routine. Incorporating non-comedogenic products into your daily regimen is essential to prevent further clogging of pores. Gently exfoliating the skin can remove dead skin cells and oils that contribute to blackheads. Moreover, using a clay mask once a week can help absorb excess oil, reducing the likelihood of blackheads forming.
The Importance of a Tailored Skincare Routine
A tailored skincare routine is vital in managing blackheads effectively. Since blackheads are a form of acne, it’s important to select products that address both acne and blackheads without over-drying the skin. Our team of experts can help design a bespoke at-home treatment plan, ensuring your skin receives the care it needs to remain clear and blackheads-free.
Frequently Asked Questions About Blackheads
Can diet affect blackheads?
Yes, diet plays a role in the formation of blackheads. High-glycemic foods can trigger hormonal fluctuations, leading to increased oil production. Incorporating a balanced diet rich in antioxidants can help manage blackheads.
Are blackheads the same as whiteheads?
No, blackheads and whiteheads are different. Blackheads are open comedones, meaning the pore is open, causing the sebum to oxidize and turn black. Whiteheads are closed comedones, where the pore is closed, trapping the sebum and dead skin cells inside.
Can squeezing blackheads make them worse?
Yes, squeezing or attempting to extract blackheads can lead to skin damage, scarring, and even more blackheads. Professional extraction by a skincare expert is recommended to safely remove blackheads.
How Often Should I Exfoliate to Prevent Blackheads?
Exfoliating is key to preventing blackheads by removing dead skin cells that can clog pores. However, over-exfoliation can irritate the skin and increase oil production, leading to more blackheads. It’s recommended to exfoliate 2-3 times a week with a gentle exfoliant suitable for your skin type.
Can Makeup Cause Blackheads?
Makeup can contribute to the formation of blackheads if it clogs the pores. To prevent blackheads, opt for non-comedogenic makeup products that are designed not to clog pores. Always ensure to thoroughly remove makeup before going to bed to let your skin breathe and prevent blackheads.
Are Blackheads a Sign of Poor Hygiene?
No, blackheads are not a sign of poor hygiene. They result from natural processes within the skin, such as oil production and dead skin cell accumulation. Maintaining a regular cleansing routine can help manage blackheads, but they can still occur regardless of how often you wash your face.
Do Blackheads Go Away on Their Own?
Some blackheads can eventually clear on their own as the skin naturally exfoliates and sheds dead skin cells. However, many blackheads require intervention through proper skincare routines, treatments, and sometimes professional extraction to be completely removed.
Is It Safe to Use Pore Strips for Blackheads?
Pore strips can provide immediate results by removing the top layer of blackheads, but they don’t prevent future blackheads from forming. Overuse can also irritate the skin. It’s better to use methods that address the root cause of blackheads, such as regular exfoliation and using retinol products.
Can Stress Cause Blackheads?
Stress doesn’t directly cause blackheads, but it can exacerbate acne and blackheads by increasing oil production through hormonal changes. Managing stress through lifestyle adjustments and relaxation techniques can indirectly help reduce blackheads.
What’s the Difference Between Blackheads and Sebaceous Filaments?
Blackheads are clogged pores filled with oil and dead skin cells that have oxidized, turning black. Sebaceous filaments are normal, hair-like structures that help oil flow to the skin surface and usually appear as small, uniform dots on the nose and cheeks. Unlike blackheads, they are not a form of acne.
How Can I Tell If My Skincare Products Are Causing Blackheads?
If you notice an increase in blackheads after starting a new product, it may be comedogenic or irritating your skin. Look for products labeled non-comedogenic and monitor your skin’s reaction when introducing new products to identify potential culprits.
How Can I Prevent Blackheads on My Nose?
Preventing blackheads on the nose involves regular cleansing, exfoliating with salicylic acid to penetrate and clear the pores, and using non-comedogenic products. Also, consider using a retinol product at night to increase cell turnover and prevent clogged pores.
Conclusion
Blackheads, while a mild form of acne, require careful attention and management. Understanding the causes of blackheads and adopting a comprehensive treatment and prevention strategy is key to achieving clear, healthy skin. At FTT Skin Clinics, we are committed to providing personalized care and effective treatments for those looking to rid their skin of blackheads. Remember, the journey to clear skin begins with understanding and properly caring for your skin.

FAQs on Folliculitis
Can folliculitis go away on its own?
Mild cases of folliculitis can resolve without treatment, but persistent or severe cases require medical intervention to prevent complications.
Is folliculitis contagious?
Folliculitis caused by a bacterial infection can be contagious, especially if someone comes into direct contact with the infected area.
Can shaving cause folliculitis?
Improper shaving techniques can lead to folliculitis by causing ingrown hairs. Using a clean razor and following the direction of hair growth can help prevent this.
Are there any lifestyle changes that can help with folliculitis?
Maintaining good personal hygiene, wearing loose-fitting clothes, and using non-comedogenic skincare products can help manage and prevent folliculitis.
How long does treatment for folliculitis take?
The duration of treatment varies depending on the severity of the condition and the individual’s response to therapy. Consistency and adherence to the treatment plan are key.
What triggers folliculitis?
Folliculitis can be triggered by a bacterial infection, especially from the Staphylococcus aureus bacteria. Wearing tight clothing that irritates the skin can also lead to folliculitis by trapping sweat and bacteria against the skin.
Can hot tubs cause folliculitis?
Yes, improperly maintained hot tubs can lead to a specific type of folliculitis known as hot tub folliculitis or Pseudomonas folliculitis. This condition is caused by the Pseudomonas bacteria found in warm, chlorinated water, leading to a widespread outbreak of folliculitis among users.
Is folliculitis only caused by shaving?
While shaving is a common cause, folliculitis can also result from friction, blockages from skin products, or specific diseases that affect the hair follicles. Using a dull razor or shaving without proper lubrication increases the risk of developing shaving-induced folliculitis.
Can diet affect folliculitis?
There’s no direct link between diet and folliculitis, but a healthy diet can improve overall skin health. Foods high in sugars and fats can trigger inflammation in the body, potentially worsening the symptoms of folliculitis.
How can I differentiate between folliculitis and acne?
Folliculitis is characterized by red, inflamed bumps around hair follicles, often with a hair in the center of the bump, whereas acne can occur anywhere on the skin and is not necessarily centered around hair follicles. Acne involves the sebaceous glands and can include blackheads and cysts, which are not typical of folliculitis.
Is it safe to pop folliculitis bumps?
Popping or squeezing folliculitis bumps can spread the infection and lead to scarring. Treatment should focus on reducing inflammation and treating the infection, not mechanical extraction.
Can stress cause folliculitis?
Stress itself does not cause folliculitis, but it can exacerbate existing skin conditions and weaken the immune system, making the skin more susceptible to infections. Managing stress levels through relaxation techniques and adequate sleep can help in the overall treatment of skin conditions like folliculitis.
Does folliculitis scar?
Severe or improperly treated folliculitis can lead to scarring or permanent hair loss in the affected area. Early and appropriate treatment of folliculitis can minimize the risk of scarring.
Can children get folliculitis?
Yes, children can develop folliculitis, often as a result of irritation from clothing or after spending time in a hot tub. Children with weakened immune systems or those who engage in sports with shared equipment may have a higher risk of developing folliculitis.
How long does folliculitis last?
The duration of folliculitis can vary. Mild cases may resolve in a few days with proper hygiene and care, while chronic or severe cases may require weeks of treatment. Consistent treatment and prevention strategies are key to managing folliculitis effectively.
Conclusion

What can we do to help with skin tags?
Skin tags are harmless do not usually cause pain or irritation. However you may consider Skin Tag removal if this is something that bothers your appearance or may snag or catch on jewellery or clothes.
At FTT Skin Clinics, we offer Plasma Non-Surgical Treatments. Plasma is the process of removing all organic matter from the surface of an object through the use of an ionised gas called Plasma. It is generated through the treatment needle, as a result the molecular chain of the skin epidermis breaks off and instantaneously causes sublimation on the skin surface.
Plasma offer minimal damage of the tissue compared to other treatments such as laser and RF. It stimulates the immune tissue resistance. As a result shows excellent performance in tissue removal with short treatment time and quick recovery.
Prior your Plasma treatment we will carry out a full complimentary skin consultation with analysis to discuss the best treatment for you.
As well as Plasma Non-Surgical Treatments, we also offer Electrolysis for Milia and Skin Tag removal. Removal of Milia & Skin Tags is a quick, easy and effective treatment which is applicable on all areas of the body. Electrolysis results in immediate removal of the Milia or Skin Tag. It can just take seconds depending on the growth size.
Please do not try to remove skin tags yourself without speaking to a practitioner or GP first.
Milia
Understanding Milia
Milia (those small white bumps) are a common occurrence on all skin types, ages, and genders. Typically forming around and under the eye area, milia is a result of keratin becoming trapped beneath the skin’s outer layer, forming tiny cysts. While these bumps are not harmful, FTT Skin Clinics recognizes the concern some may have about their appearance. We offer a range of effective treatments to address and remove milia. If you’ve noticed any new milia bumps, we advise consulting your GP or booking a consultation with our experienced physicians.
